The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest, public nonprofit hunger and nutrition education resource in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Each year the CAFB distributes 20 million pounds of food – including 6 million pounds of fresh produce – to over 700 partner agencies.

Orientation and training begins at 1:00 p.m. There will be a 15-minute film about the CAFB and how it serves the community. Everyone is trained together. Individuals may be working on several projects including food sorting. The activity can vary from day to day depending on what comes into the warehouse. The work is considered light/medium labor. They can accommodate most physical limitations but please indicate on the registration form below if you have any special needs.

Guidelines:

  • Minimum age is 12 years old.
  • Please wear jeans and comfortable, closed-toe shoes.
  • Water coolers will be available, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own bottle of water.
  • Please do not attend if you feel sick or have a cough, runny nose, flu-like symptoms, open wounds, or a food-borne illness.
  • Disposable latex gloves will be provided.

Volunteers can travel to the CAFB via public transportation and further information will be provided to registered volunteers as we near the service date. The CAFB is about a 10-minute walk from the Brookland-CUA Metro station and is located in a row of warehouses.
