C-4 Law Libraries and the Access to Justice Revolution
The legal system is undergoing a little-recognized revolutionary change as it transforms itself from a case-resolving system into a system of access to justice for all. Components of this revolutionary change include: the increase in the number of self-represented litigants and the courts’ recognition of their obligation to respond to that challenge, courts using technology as a self-service gateway for the public, the campaign for “civil Gideon” (a right to counsel in some civil cases), and revisions to the ABA Model Code of Judicial Conduct, which redefine the ways a judge may engage with self-represented litigants in their courtrooms. Richard Zorza, a national leader in many of these interrelated movements, will analyze these critical trends and their implications for law libraries.
