A modern, private law firm library nestled in the historic Penn Quarter neighborhood of Washington, D.C., Alston & Bird Library is next door to Ford’s Theater, where Lincoln was shot, and around the corner from the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. The original building was constructed in 1847, and the library, designed in 2006, became the focal point for the building design. Unlike many private fi rm libraries, this was designed to be larger than the previous one, with greater shelf capacity and more seating. The library ceilings are 12.5 feet with over 7-foot windows. Fireplaces, anchored at each end of the reading room, feature intricate 19th-century tiles, and brass and cherry ladders allow access to books on the upper shelves. This is a “must see” private firm library.
