Please join us for a joint program at the Luce Foundation Center for American Art & National Portrait Gallery for varying age groups. Our younger folks can enjoy a Portrait Story and some hands-on fun while learning about some of the famous Americans featured in the Portrait Gallery. Our older kids are invited to join a scavenger hunt in the Luce Center, a remarkable three-story open storage facility housing paintings, sculpture, folk art and contemporary crafts of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Think very elegant attic!
Located in D.C.’s Penn Quarter, this historic building is one of the oldest public buildings constructed in early Washington, D.C., and recently reopened after extensive renovation. A gorgeous example of Greek Revival architecture, the building houses these two collections in interesting ways. Exploring the galleries, you will find a very special reminder of this building’s role as a Civil War hospital that was recovered during the renovation. Intrigued? Join the fun!
Logistics: Meet at the Renaissance Washington, D.C., Hotel for a snack. At 1:40 p.m., we’ll walk over to the museum together. Or just join us at the museum at 2:00 p.m. The programs will begin at 2:15 p.m.
Attendance is limited, so please sign up early. We need to plan for snacks and for the activity so that everyone who wishes can participate!
